God's gifts from broken microwaves

We tasted so many of God's blessings this week, I wanted to put them down before they were forgotten...

- When Abel's babysitter let us know that she could not watch Abel Wednesday because she had sick kids, my mother-in-law cancelled her plans to watch him for the day.

- The next day, when his sitter still couldn't watch him, we asked a neighbor to watch him.  We got a call at 10:15 Wednesday night that the neighbor had sick kids, too.  So on Thursday morning, at an early 7:15, I called a sweet friend from church who had volunteered to watch Abel, should we ever need it.  She changed her plans, and made herself available to watch him, even taking him to a program at her child's school and then bringing him back to my classroom at the end of the day.

- Last weekend, Scott and my father-in-law, Steve, went to install our new microwave.  A few weeks ago, our six-year-old microwave died suddenly.  God blessed us by allowing us to use our toaster oven and stove top instead of the microwave in the mean time.  We discovered how delicious hot dogs were in the broiler of the toaster oven and how creamy stove top oatmeal was.  :)  (Funny the things we convenience-lovers learn that our grandparents already know!)  Scott had found a good deal on another microwave from BestBuy online, and they even shipped it to us for free.  When Scott and Steve went to install it, they found that there was a puddle of water near the ventilation duct.  After some further investigation on the roof, Scott discovered that the duct connection at the roof was damaged; apparently, rain water was coming in, and had ruined our former microwave.  After some discussion about best ways to fix it, Scott decided to call the man who replaced our roof (given to us as an answered prayer) last year.  Scott let the roofer know that we just wanted him to look at it, but that we realized it was not a problem in the roofing that he put in, but in the duct itself.  The roofer said he'd stop by the next afternoon (Tuesday) while Scott and I were at work and he'd just let himself up to check it out.  By Wednesday, Scott and I were wondering why we had not heard back from him, when Scott went out to the front porch.  He discovered our roofer's business card with a note jotted on the back: "Found the problem.  Took care of it."  And just like that, we got another gift from God.  Our reliable roofer fixed a problem that wasn't even his fault, with no charge.

The next part of the story came when Scott took the new microwave out of the box and found that the side of it had been damaged.  He called the BestBuy customer service number and asked how they could help him with that.  The man said that Scott would have to bring it into the store if he wanted any help with the problem and that now the price of it was $30 less than we had paid for it.  Scott explained that our store is a distance away from us (not to mention the awkwardness of bundling up a microwave for transport) and could he get a credit for the price difference?  The man said that Scott could take the receipt by the store and request the money.  Scott did our errands on Friday and went out of his way to stop by BestBuy.  The customer service representative acted as if he were crazy when he requested the refund, and  she claimed that they did not offer those from online merchandise.  Scott asked to get further assistance with the problem and ended up on the store's phone, talking to someone at their customer service helpline again.  This rep realized that Scott was telling the truth, because he pulled up our account and saw the note listed on it.  He also asked if Scott had been offered credit for the damaged microwave.  Scott explained that he had not, and the man credited us back $55 for the hassle of the whole ordeal.  Wow... another gift.

- My back pain has also eased up!  Sitting is still very uncomfortable, but the remainder of the time, the pain is much less that it had been.  :)

Thank you for Your sweet mercies, God.
